QIAGEN Wins Industry Excellence Award for "Best Licensing Deal of the Year" in Animal Health
Jury recognized strategic value of partnership with VLA to commercialize molecular tests for infectious veterinary diseases
Venlo, The Netherlands, September 26, 2007. QIAGEN, the world's leading provider of sample and assay technologies for life sciences, applied testing and molecular diagnostics, has received the prestigious Animal Pharm Industry Excellence Award 2007 for the "Best Licensing Deal of the Year" in the animal health industry. The award, which was announced at the Animal Pharm Awards ceremony on September 25 in London, is bestowed annually to individuals and organizations who demonstrated remarkable achievements in veterinary health.
The jury, consisting of 12 independent industry experts, recognized the strategic value of the licensing agreement which QIAGEN entered with the British Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) in October 2006. This collaboration allowed QIAGEN to enter the fast growing market for veterinary tests with validated assays, and to provide veterinary diagnostic laboratories around the world with faster, more sensitive, next generation PCR-based veterinary diagnostic technologies. As part of this agreement, QIAGEN acquired rights to commercialize a portfolio of PCR-based, molecular tests for infectious veterinary diseases affecting livestock such as horses and cattle. These diagnostic tests were developed and validated by the VLA and based on QIAGEN's sample and assay technologies.
"This partnership brings together one of the world's largest veterinary research and diagnostic testing facilities with the market leader in sample and assay technologies," said Simone Gauch, QIAGEN's Director Global Marketing Applied Testing. "This relationship combines QIAGEN's strong technological capabilities with VLA's in-depth expertise in animal diseases and veterinary diagnostics. The assay portfolio resulting from this collaboration has the potential to increase QIAGENfs strong competitive advantage in the market place."
"QIAGEN has a strong presence in the veterinary research and testing market," said Dr. Andrew Soldan, Commercial Programme Manager for VLA. "This partnership is a great example of collaborations between the public and private sectors that will further enhance the VLA reputation and facilitate the application of PCR technologies to a larger number of veterinary laboratories. The royalty-based agreement will give VLA the opportunity to fund future research and benefit QIAGEN by providing access to a significant portfolio of validated assays."
